The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Despair by Edvard Munch from 1892.
The painting is dominated by a strong emotional state. At the same time as it was painted, he wrote the following lines in his diary: “I walked the road away with two friends - the sun was setting. I felt a pang of sadness. The sky suddenly turned red. I stopped, leaned against the railing, tired of death (…) I stood there trembling with anguish and I felt a great endless scream through nature”
Edvard Munch is Norway's foremost artist and became a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.
